November Competition – Celebrate Lancashire Day with a Hamper from Dewlay Cheesemakers

At the International Cheese Awards, we’re very proud to host the world’s biggest and best cheese show right here in the beautiful Cheshire countryside – but that doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate all the other wonderful things on our doorstep. Just north of us lies the glorious county of Lancashire with its proud food and farming heritage – and so this month we’re thrilled to have teamed up again with Dewlay Cheesemakers to offer one lucky winner a hamper full of goodies to celebrate Lancashire Day on November 27th.

What is Lancashire Day?

Lancashire Day is an annual celebration of all things to do with this historic Red Rose county, and is held every year on November 27th to mark the occasion in 1295 when Lancashire first sent representatives to Parliament, to attend what became the Model Parliament of King Edward I. So whilst Lancashire Day itself is a fairly recent event, first held in 1996, the day allows proud Lancastrians to celebrate their long history and draw attention to the wonderful countryside, culture and – of course – food and drink that exists here. Dewlay Cheesemakers, based in Garstang, are keen supporters of the event and kindly gave us a lovely prize last year in its honour – and we’re pleased to say it was such a success, they’re doing it again!

Award-winning Lancashire Cheeses from Dewlay Cheesemakers

Dewlay Cheesemakers was founded back in 1957 by George Kenyon, whose grandsons Nick and Richard still run the business today from its home on the outskirts of Garstang in Lancashire. As third generation cheesemakers, the Kenyon boys are keen to keep alive the traditional methods used by their father and grandfather - all of their Lancashire cheese is produced using fresh pasteurised milk sourced directly from farms located within 6 miles of the Dewlay dairy, and uses their own unique starter culture developed on site more than 40 years ago. They also remain true to their Lancashire roots by producing a whole range of this most proudly local of cheeses. Their careful respect for tradition and close attention to detail results in some truly great cheeses that have been widely praised – not least in Nantwich at the International Cheese Awards. This year, Dewlay won an astonishing four trophies, ten Golds, and eleven other awards – all the more impressive when you consider there were more than 5000 entries!
