January Competition: Win Some Beautiful Burt’s Cheese

Ah, January. Season of cutting back (both on food and finances), vacuuming up pine needles, scraping ice off the car in the mornings, making vague promises to go to the gym… on the face of it, this most underrated of all the months doesn’t really have much going for it. That’s why, ever helpful, we’ve teamed up with Burt’s Cheese for this month’s competition – one lucky person will get the year off to a really good start by receiving the gift of cheese before the end of the month.

Success at the ICA

Burt’s Cheese is a real local success story, beginning life in 2009 in Altrincham, Cheshire and receiving almost instant recognition with a gold award at the International Cheese Awards for the Burt’s Blue in 2010. This is thanks to the skill and patience of cheese maker Claire Burt – the cheese is all handmade in small vats, and the time and care invested in this process is evident in the rich taste and creamy texture of each and every one.

Claire’s best known cheese is the Burt’s Blue, a semi-soft cheese made using pasteurised cow’s milk from local dairies and pierced during the ripening process to allow the growth of mild blue veins. She also produces Drunken Burt, the same cheese but this time washed in cider rather than allowed to develop as a blue cheese, giving the cheese a beautiful golden colour and a smooth, slightly smoky taste. This cheese is also perfect for baking as a dinner party starter (if you can bear to share it, that is).

Claire is kindly offering the chance to win all the cheeses in the Burt’s range – a Burt’s Blue (180g), a Drunken Burt (also 180g, and Claire is including a bake box so that you can try the serving suggestion above), and – most exciting of all – the brand new DiVine cheese. Set to launch in 2015, the DiVine is Burt’s cheese washed in cider and then wrapped in vine leaves, and therefore offers all the flavour of the Drunken Burt but with a texture more like a washed rind cheese (my absolute favourite type of cheese, so I’m pretty excited about this one). Not yet widely available, the DiVine is already receiving plaudits, winning Gold in the Novice Class at the International Cheese Show 2014.
